After much discussion and expressing their desire to welcome Derek to their team this season as well as the 2012-2013 season, the Houston Rockets and Derek have negotiated a buyout.
Derek’s desire to win a sixth championship is what drives him and will continue to drive him as he moves forward.
We thank the Houston Rockets front office for their interest, time and their absolute professionalism.
There will be no further comment at this time.
We miss u DFish
You are and always will be a Laker to us along with Lamar. I pray that it will all work out for you.
Fisher , i know that all the lakers fan out there are very sad bt we all know that you didn’t chose to leave LA ..well i jst hope that you will continue being the best player and a leader in a team….and imma tell you one thing , and that is i never thought i’d become a Houston Rocket fan bt i guess from today and on i’ll be both a lakers and Rockets fan ..we’ll all miss you .GOd bless you Fisher!!
SINCE THE JERRY WEST, AND WILT CHAMBERLAIN TANDEM,THE TRIUMVIRATE OF MAGIC,JAMES, AND KAREEM UP TO THE STINT TANDEM OF THE SHAQ, AND TONY DOWN TO THE KOBY, PAU DUO I HAVE BEEN AND WILL ALWAYS CHEER FOR THE PURPLE,GOLD,BLUE AND THE NOW WHITE JERSIES OF THE LAKERS. YOUR SUDDEN DEPARTURE TO THE ROCKETS WAS A SHOCK TO US HERE AVID FANS IN THE PHILIPPINES BECAUSE WE ARE USED TO WHENEVER WE WATCHED A LAKERS GAME AT ANY GIVEN TIME,WE ALWAYS EXPECT YOUR PRESENCE AS A TEAM SPIRITUAL AND CHARISMATIC COURT GENERAL.BUT BE THAT AS IT MAY FISH, EVEN YOUR NOT FISHING ON YOUR FORMER FISHING GROUND ANYMORE REST ASSURED THAT,WE WILL ALWAYS REMAIN AT YOUR FOOTING AND WHEN THE TIME COMES THAT YOU WILL RETURN AT THE STAPLES WITH YOUR NEW HORDE OF WARRIORS,WE WILL WELCOME YOU WITH UTMOST CHEERS.FOR IN MY HEART YOU WILL ALWAYS BE THE SAME DEREK FISHER, THE LAKER MAN OF THE HOUR. GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY FISHING!
D-Fish is a class act!! He has done so much for the Lakers organization on & off the court. He has been the consumate professional athlete anyone should & would love to have on their team. He has been so loyal to the Lakers over his career. I am very dissappointed that the organization decided to trade him. You do not trade guys like this who mean so much the team!! He helped this team win 5 NBA championships!!! He need to have his jersey retired and hung in the rafters w/ all the other greats!! Te Lakers will miss him! I have been so upset about is exit from the team! It really is frustrating. I hope nothing but the best for him and his family.
Hey I am a fun of yours and I been there watching you and coby playing all these years and bringing us so much pride to are laker team and I want to thank you for all your hard work, and you always be a laker to me.. good luck bro.
I too was so shocked to hear of you being traded Derek. You always exhibited a true professional nature and Really cared for the “team”,
not only on the court but in the locker room and in your duties during the NBA meltdown of several months. I truly don’t understand the Laker owners’
lack of loyalty to one who has done so much for their team. Go on a do greater things Derek, continue to be one that all can be proud to have watched play great basketball. It is really hard to be for the Lakers now.
Derek,
Im sorry, i was binge’n on crack when i traded you. I could have sworn it was Slava Medvedenko that i traded while high on blistering good Crack, from the mean streets of L.A.. as of now im submitting your Laker Jersey to the powers that be… and like a phoenix, your jersey WILL rise in the staples center, for all to see… forever.
~Mitch Kupchak.
Derrick it was really sad to see you go all those great memories in L.A will never be forgotten just because your not a part of the lakers no more doesn’t mean I am not a fan of you still. You will always be remembered as the clutch and great player of the LAKERS in my eyes. Thank you for you time hope to see you win another championship somewhere else.
stay strong D-Fish… we’ll always miss you in LA… but the Lakers did what was best for them, and likewise you should do what is best for you! I wish you luck wherever you end up and I am sad that we cannot re-sign you due to the CBA rules!
Derek thanks for your devotion to a sport that’s more then just a game. We will miss you!
You will always be a LAKER in our hearts!
NO MATTER WHAT TEAM YOU END UP, YOU WILL ALWAYS BE A LAKER!
#TEAMFISHER
Dear Mr. Fisher,
I am a huge Laker fan, always will be, and you have always been one of my favorite players. I greatly admire your dedication, drive, and hard work on the court as well as the way you carry yourself off the court. The way you represent Christ professionally inspires me to strive to follow Him in my daily actions.
I was devastated to discover that you were traded. I feel that you have done so much for the Laker organization both on and off the court. Just know that I still believe in you and know that you will only use this to work harder. I wish you luck in your future career and will have you in my prayers. I hope that your return to Staples Center will show you how much us Laker fans appreciate and support you still.
God Bless
Fish you have always been my favorite player, I too admire your drive, dedication and leadership on the court, but I love the way you represent yourself off the court even better. You my friend are the sports hero that kids all over need to model themsselves after.
I am sad to hear you have been traded. I followed you to the Warriors and to the Jazz, I am glad you negotiated a buy out, I want to see you back as a Laker in July. The Laker organization should be ashamed of what they did to you, trading the clutchman for a back up, are you kidding.
God bless you Fish, I will remain a fan always.
I couldn’t have said it better myself! I echo the above statement. And I really wish loyalty played a part in professional sports.
I’m done with the Lakers….let’S keep Dfish in Los Angeles where he belongs,go get him Clipper!!!!
Thank you DFish for the many years as a faithful Laker, NBA player, and players president for this sports. You mean a lot to this city, and much more to the game. We hope for sure to see you again. We owe it too you!!!
Interesting info thanks for the share.

Derek, very sad and shocked to hear of your departure
From the lakers. Our family is not happy about this, but what’s
Done is done.. Maybe a miracle will happen & the Laker
organization will take there heads out of there you know what’s
& re-sign you. Wishing you much success.
After all he’s done for and with the Lakers, Derek deserves the respect and decency of playing until he retires as a Laker. That is all I have to say.
I agree …I am no longer a Lakers fan…
UR NOT A TRU LAKER FAN!!!!! FISH WE LOVE U BRAH THX 4 ALL U HAVE DONE FOR THE LAKESHOW!!!! GOD BLESS U AND UR FAMILY!!!!!!
UR NOT A TRU LAKER FAN!!!!! FISH WE LOVE U BRAH THX 4 ALL U HAVE DONE FOR THE LAKESHOW!!!! GOD BLESS U AND UR FAMILY!!!!!!

I also agree! I am now divided as to how I feel about the Lakers organization as a result of the trade… Fisher was key ingredient to them winning, his departure has already had an impact with the team going 1 for 3 and kobe having back to back horrible shooting nights
Wherever you end up, I will root for you and your team. So disappointed in the Lakers and their decision after all you have done for them. Hope you get that 6th championship!!!
I totally agree with you Vy. I am heartbroken that the Lakers traded Derek. I am not going to stop being a Laker fan because that is the team I grew up on. I am not big on Jim Buss though. He father should trade him for Jeannie! Anyway, thank you Fish for all of the blood, sweat, and tears you left on the hardwood aoo of these years in the purple and gold. The Lakers are going to miss your clutch play and experience come playoff time, not to mention your leadership. You will always be in this fan’s heart.
Amen!!! DFish ( who I call my 0.4 guy ) should have a key to the city and will always be my second Lakers player, right behind Magic! Those 2 professionalism and work ethic is the one of the few reason why I still love the game of basketball. DFish you’re a true and loyal Laker! You will get a 6th ring!!!
I am so disappointed in the Laker management that they did not let Fish retire a Laker. For ALLLLLL he has done for this team over the years it is such BS they would trade him. Is there not any loyalty at all???? After all Fish showed his every time he stepped on the BB floor. You are by far Fish one classy man and you will be missed by every Laker fan. Thank you for all you have given the team and your fans. YOU WILL BE MISSED!
I go away for a weekend and come back to learn my favorite Laker has been traded. That’s it for me. When money is everything: when it trumps loyalty, when it substitutes for sportsmanship, when it disrespects the fans– who cares? All the best to you, Fish, because you deserve the best.
AFTER ALL YOU HAVE DONE REPRESENTING THE LAKER WITH DISTINCTION AND LOYALTY..AS WELL AS REPRESENTING THE NBA PLAYERS DURING THE HOLD-OUT1 always setting the example for the young people of this era..giving your “all” on and off the court! i still love the Lakers (the players) but have lost total respect for management…”NO”one stepped up for you..not even Jeanne or Dr.Jerry Buss..was absolutely shocked in dissmay…i am sorry, but Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak (Mr.stab-in-the-back) G.M (general merchandise)..i know that Jerry West or Magic Johnson would have spoken up!..and Jeanne..where are YOU?? after leaving the Nuggets to seek help for D-
fish’s daughter..i thought the Lakers were so great to receive
Fish back..and even got another ring too! But, he was hung out to dry..and couldn’t finish his carreer with the team HE loved and believed in!..i “too” (as a fan for over 44 years) feel the same “betrayal”…GOD BLESS YOU D-FISH..AND YOUR FAMILY TOO! WE STIL LOVE YOU AND ALWAYS WILL! RESPECTFULLY CHUCK ARMENDARIZ SAN CLEMENTE,CA.
A great player , athlete and legend.
Kratom 100x
I just wanted to personally thank you for 5 amazing championships and your undying loyalty and total professionalism. In a town of flash and no substance – your work ethic and commitment where a sight to behold. The city of LA and all Laker fans will always love you Fish. Your an amazing player, an amazing leader and just a great human being and it always showed. Good Luck to you Fish and I hope you get your sixth championship, just not at he Purple & Gold’s expense. Bless you, Brother and Godspeed…
I can’t express enough how devastated I am that you have been traded! HUGE mistake! My son bought tickets to take me to a Laker game on March 31 just so that I would see you play. You are amazing, and I am praying that you will be on a team that really values you and that you will see much playing time. God will open a door for you. Thanks for being Character Driven!
Well said,I could not have said that any better…It was a sad day for me when i found out…I am and have been a Laker fan for as long as i can remember.. but I am and always will be a Derek Fisher fan!!
The brothers a quiter. Gets traded and doesnt want to play. What a spoiled ##ssy. He is a typical Californian. Cant trust ant of them to complete a job. Stay there old man. You deserve it. This shows your caracter as a person. Winner my ass, you are now knkown as a quiter and loser.
I am such a big fan of Mr. Fisher not only because of his skills on the court but because of his love of his family and gentleman-ly behavior of the court, too. I proudly wore my FISHER jersey every time I went Staples and look forward to supporting him again.
Derek you have been the glue to hold the lakers team together. I feel the lakers made a bad decision & that you should be able to retire a laker! I’ve been a Fisher fan since you played w/shaq and that you were the voice of reason for the lakers team even when you had to leave for your daughters sake. You have blead purple & gold and I wish you didn’t have to go:-( much respect!!! And I already miss you fish!!! 🙁
All the best for you fish my man!
U can go 0/9 from the 3 point range. But WHEN it counts, u drop the 1 that MATTERS MOST. So to go 1/10 this time if year going into the playoffs. It WILL B MISSED from #2. We should retire ur #.
I have been a laker fan since 1975; a year after DFish was born. Derek is a Great Player and deserved and earned respect from the laker management, and everybody on this Planet/Universe! Laker Management should have talked to Derek before any trade! Sunday was the 1st time I ever wanted the Lakers to lose a game; because of their treatment of Derek, and I am Glad they lost to the Jazz. The Lakers problem is not Fisher; it is the indecisive coach, and Kobe’s unwillingness to pass the ball at the right time, and average 8 or more assist per game after breaking down the defense! Laker Management and all league owners are happy to get the Players President! There needs to be a Rule that any player with 7 years or more with a team, MUST BE TOLD ABOUT ANY TRADE!!! David Boies can help! I hope the Lakers can CORRECT THIS MISTAKE and REALLY, SINCERELY APOLOGIZE, and retire Fisher’s number when he retires! God Bless You DFISH; and your family. I will always be in Derek Fisher’s Corner!
Shock, dismay and sadness on losing you Mr. Fisher. Wish it wasn’t so and while I wish things would have turned out differently; I am thankful for the outstanding years, integrity, skill and energy your gave to not just the Lakers and Laker fans, but to the city of LA in general. I’m seeing sides of professional sports these days which are really disheartening on many levels and I can only imagine how it could affect you, if you were not the stellar, rock of gibralter you have always been.
There is noone like you and you will be greatly missed. All the best to you and yours moving forward.
This is just insane. Watching the game, expecting to see you there ready to go…you’ll always be our #2 D-Fish!!
Thank You Derek Fisher for all you have done for the Lakers. You were so much more than just an amazing basketball player on the team. You were an integral part of those championships as well as the “El Presidente” in the locker room. You will be missed. I am hopeful you can rejoin the Lakers at some point and retire a Laker. Your jersey deserves to be up in the rafters as one of the Laker greats. God Bless you and your family. Best wishes to you. Much love from an Orange County Laker fan.
Dear Derek,
I had the honor of meeting you and of sending the daughter of my assistant to your fantastic summer program 2 years in a row. Your character and integrity stand out in a sport where, sadly, those traits are valued less than flash and bad behavior. Clearly Laker management has changed in the past year and no longer understands the value of someone with your work ethic. They certainly missed you last night at the buzzer when they could have gone to overtime had KB not made a rim shot while attempting a 3. No matter. You are still a solid clutch player, and more importantly, you will be the heart and soul of the team that’s lucky enough to have you. Hopefully it will be where you can contribute to your 6th ring. We fans – fans of the .04 second game-winner, fans of character, fans of the guy who can stand up at meetings and bring warring superstars together to make it a true team effort – we feel the loss and we will miss you. In our hearts, we will always see purple and gold when we look at you -no matter whether you’re wearing the uniform of Miami, OKC, or whether you’ve eventually retired—on YOUR terms, and we will always see #2 in that familiar stance – arms out, bent at the waist, ready to move, when we watch or think of the Lakers. Thank you for all you’ve done for the franchise, the game, the city, the fans and the kids. You are 100% a class act and you’ll never be forgotten.
FISH!!! You will always be a Laker! You are just as critical to thei 5 championships as Kobe and Shaq.
Who will ever forget the heroic .4 second shot, that ultimately turned the momentum in that series.
The dignity and grace you always played with. The class when Kobe and Shaq were arguing like to super rich cry babies!.
D Fish, much respect and THANK you! You will always be my favorite PG for the Lakers after #32.
Thanks Again!

I literally cried when I heard Derek Fisher was traded, it was like losing a family member. I hope by some miracle, the Lakers come to their senses and get Derek back somehow, Derek Fisher deserves to retire as a Laker – go out on his own terms, after all he has brought to this team . We love you Derek.
You are the reason I grew up to live and breathe basketball. I’ve been a laker fan since I was a little girl. I love you Fisher 🙂 you will always be a laker in our hearts… But they will regret losing you!! You are my favorite basketball player in the world. I’m do happy I got the chance to go to one of your last home laker games against the Boston Celtics, reppin your #2 Jersey 🙂 I just wish you would have gotten my proposal on the jumbotron at halftime. Love you Fisher, you’ll always be the best no matter where you go!! <3
Derek, I have watch and admired you for your entire career.
Without question, you are an all time clutch superstar, but even more amazing is your eloquence in representing fellow players. Keep up the good work!!!
So your too good for the Rockets Fish? I mean crap dude your 38 years old. You had the chance to play with some up and coming guys in the league. It’s good you got out of LA though.. That team is going no where fast.
Derek, in addition to being one of my all-time favorite players you are a true class act and an example of how one should conduct oneself. You have given me many memorable Lakers moments and I will miss seeing you on the court immensely. It won’t be the same.
Derek Fisher is one of the very few NBA Players I respect. The trade should and would not change him. You’re a born leader with integrity and carriage. The whole world admired your stand during the recent lock-outs and your dynamic position in the bargains. Be at peace with yourself. Your best is yet to come and I wish you good health to live long and see the evolution of the game you love.
I was completely saddened by the news of the trade… Not only did the Lakers loose a great player, they also lost their HEART!!
To my favorite player, on my once favorite team. Every time I watch the Lakers I always love to see you on the court. You are so dedicated. Out of all the other players in the NBA, you are the one who always seems to be there to help the team and not just for the money and fame. You are so loyal. It’s absolutely amazing. The Lakers made a wrong decision trading their starter point, with 5 championships with the Lakers. Los Angeles is your home. Whichever team you choose, is the team I will now be going for. You are not old, and you do not need to retire. You are amazing, and always will be. Your shots are just perfect rainbow shots. I have the most respect for you than any other player. Can’t wait to see you on the court again, and in a new nice jersey. Let’s go Derek Fisher! Much love, <33
D-fish… this is a sad day for all Laker fans…while I understand that the business of sports can be cold at times I hate that the Lakers have lost you. You have made it easy to be a Laker fan both by your performances on the court (that 4th quarter against that team from massachusetts and your post game interview are amongst my greatest memories as a Laker fan since 1985) as well as your character off the court. Mainly I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart and wish you, Candace, and your beautiful kids well in the future… Laker fans still love you and we always will! cant wait for the day that the Laker organization honors you properly!
-Patrick
You don’t trade character man…
You will ALWAYS be a Laker to me. I will miss seeing you in the purple and gold. I can’t hardly believe it. 🙁
Derek,
You are my favorite player of all time. I have watched you from day 1 with the Lakers. I was crushed when you got traded. This ends my days watching the Lakers.
Derek: I am a fan of yours. I will follow your career wherever you choose to go. It is possible for me to be a fan of the Lakers players, and not always agree with the “front Office”.
You are such a gentleman, and have always remained very professional. These are qualities I admire in you.
I wish you and your family the very best regards.
Sincerely,
Sue Bothwell
The Lakers are greedy, stupid, short sighted and without any loyalty! It was a bad and wrong decision to let you go from LA. The team won’t be the same without your leadership and amazing abilities in the clutch situations. Come back to LA as a coach! We need you and want you back!
My Brother in Christ,
Now HE can really do something thru you! The adversity you have suffered in the past has prepared you for this time, BUT now HE can really use you.
The public forum you’ve been a part of has been remarkable, few athletes have had such a magnificant career.
Now, get ready for the next season – we aren’t saying your NBA days are done … but you are clearly ready to be the witness of HIS awesome power when HE uses you to testify on HIS grace thru… unemployment, rejection and career challenges.
To GOD be the Glory!
Thanks for the memories! You deserved better from the Lakers after 13 seasons, 5 championships, and countless big moments. The Lakers did not treat you how someone who’s done as much as you have for the organization should be treated. I will always be rooting for you in your future endeavors, whether basketball or otherwise.
P.S. – Please don’t sign with the Celtics! I couldn’t handle that.
I’m not just shocked that you were traded, but devastated. You and Kobe are my favorites. Thank you for all the years of my personal enjoyment, just watching you, but your devotion and commitment to the Lakers and the fans. You are truely a very special person in so many ways. I feel betrayed by the front office and they are traitors and ingrates in my eyes and will be for some time to come. We love you and wish you the very best.
Our family is very sorry to see you not with the Lakers.Thank you for all youryears! We will miss you and wish you so many good things for your future!
The Lakers should’ve kept D-Fish as a back up to Sessions. Derek is so valuable in the fourth quarter and always has been a viable option for clutch situations. I am very disappointed in the Lakers front office management for letting Fisher go like this. Maybe the Clippers can pick him up as a backup to Chris Paul.
the love you have showed for this team is incredible and i can’t believe they’ve let you go…no one will be able to fill your shoes in the hearts of laker fans..XOXO
i’m gonna have to split my love between the lakers and the rockets now…
This trade should never have happened! The business end of the game is one thing but the loyalty and devotion you have demonstrated on and off the court to the Lakers has been disrespected by them. I’m sorry you aren’t a Laker anymore but I know you aren’t done. Go for the sixth ring. God bless you.
derek fisher its ok you were a good point guard knocking the 3 pointer down use the lakers the fans wish you the best.
Derek Fisher as other’s have already stated it bears repeating, you will be truly missed. Thank you for your time, hard work, patience, professionalism and most of all the LOVE you have given to not only Los Angeles Lakers, but the NBA as a whole. Although you are no longer physically a Laker, you will always be a Laker in my heart. You will be truly missed in Purple and Gold, but I pray that they, (laker organization) will come to their senses and you can retire a Laker. God Bless!
Hi Fish….I am dumbfounded why the Lakers released you. A very poor decision by JIM BUSS. I want to thank you for being such a classy guy. You handle yourself so well under pressure and certainly the one person that truly understands Kobe. Thank you for the 5 championships! Our family wishes you the very best in your future endeavors.
I changed my twitter avi to a picture of you for the weekend. I know you wanted to be a Laker for life, but the powers that be thought otherwise. With that being said. I’ll miss you and if we get this 6th ring, it’ll be bittersweet…
I remember the night Chick Hearn first introduced Fish to the public. Chick said ( paraphrasing) “Ladies and gentlemen , I would like to introduce the newest Laker to you. He is a fine young man that I guarantee you will like. He is the type of young man that says “yes sir” and “yes mam” when speaking to you .”
Boy was Chick ever right about D.Fish. We are all so proud of him ( well except for that little stint in Utah) and wish him all the best!
Derek in my mind you are and have been the man. I have followed you since your rookie year to the Warriors to Utah and back to my beloved Lakers. Thank you for you great clutch moments, great leadership on and off the court and keeping Kobe check. Your true fans know your worth to the Lakers and it is unfortunate that the Lakers did not understand your worth. Go and get your 6th ring and show them all Go DFish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dear Mr. Derek Fisher,
I nearly cried when I read the news about you being traded. You’re an amazingly dedicated basketball player. You take your game seriously but having fun at the same time. No matter where you go, now and forever you’ll be a Laker. Thank you so much for every game you played with the Lakers. From going coast to coast, to lobbing it perfectly, to hitting those left handed clutch three’s. You are seriously my biggest inspiration to keep playing basketball everyday and keep making my game better. I love you DFish, you’re seriously one of the greats. You have been there for the team on and off the court. I hope and wish that you will get re-signed to the Lakers and when you retire, you retire as a Laker. You’re amazing and I can’t say thank you enough. Thank you Mr. Derek Fisher. Thank you.
God Bless You.
Lakers now and forever <3
Thanks for all the hard work that brought happiness to all of us, your fans. It is truly sad that we will not see you wearing the Lakers colors anymore. All of your fans wish you the best in life, you will be missed in LA for a long time. You have earned the right to be remembered as one of the pivotal members in Lakers history, and your name will be mentioned alongside Magic, Kareem, and Kobe, as one of the great players this city ever saw.
D FISH you are, always were, and always will be the Man to us REAL fans. The way you have been treated by the Laker organization is a disgrace and uncalled for. I have had the pleasure of watching your whole NBA career and know for a fact how important you were to all 5 Championships and all the W’s. I as a 35 year Laker Fan could never express enough gratitude for the respect and honor that you have exhibited while on the Lakers. Whatever the future holds for you, you can be sure that all of us Real Laker fans will always Love you and be rooting for you. You’re the SH$T!!
During your stay with the Lakers, my Son and I shared many a Hi-Five… You were on the court as I introduced my young son to the Game of Basketball. When I was younger and on the court, my friends and I would argue over who was Magic, Kareem, Scott or whoever from the Showtime era…Now that I have a different argument with my son…And the winner gets to be Fish..
Thanks for the memories #2.
What can I say Fish. I’m so disappointed in the Lakers management and ownership right now. I’ve been a Lakers fan since the days of Wilt and West and can’t recall any other time I’ve been this upset with how a Laker has been treated, with maybe the exception of Kermit Washington.
You will always be one of my favorite Lakers. I was shocked when you left the Lakers before and was absolutely thrilled when you returned. You have always been one of the truly class acts in a league with players that too often show little class. You have lead by example. I sincerely hope that you find a situation that suits you. I just wish there was a way to get you right back on the team and I’m sure your teammates feel the same way. You’re the kind of guy that anyone would be proud to have on their team. I don’t know how the Lakers management and ownership think they can replace your heart and leadership. Thanks for all your years of class, dedication, and sensational play. Luv ya, Fish. Good Luck to you and your family.
All I have to say is that the Laker execs could of given Fish a heads up or at least let HIM decide if he wanted to leave or just retire! Fish has been the heart and team motivator, he has always made it where it counts and when it was most needed.. I have been a Laker fan but most of all a Derek Fisher fan and I’m not too sure I want to watch the team play without #2 on the court.. I will follow my Fisher wherever he goes.. Good luck Fish, get ur 6th ring!!!
I have hanging in my office the LA Times photo of your lay up, beating Garnett, Allen and Perkins, just before sacrificing your body. Awesome. That play turned the series, led the Lakers to the championship. Good luck on finding your path to championship #6!
I was devastated on trade day. I couldn’t & still dont understand how you Mitch tradedyou. You are the key, foundation & leader to the Lakers. im still a lakers fan, but I don’t enjoy the games because you’re not there. I will be angry if I see another player wear #2; it should be retired. you keep your head up & keep showing everyone that as long as you remain professional, respectful on & off the court & stay in excellent physical condition as you are, you will win a 6th ring with the next team & I will be cheering.
DFish2.0 I’m very shocked and saddened to learn of the trade…. thanks for your awesome commitment to The Lakers over the two time periods that U were in purple & gold…. U’ll for be considered a laker…
DFish2.0 Estoy muy impresionado y entristeció el comercio….gracias a su impresionante compromiso a los Lakers durante los dos periodos de tiempo que usted se de púrpura y oro, para ser considerado un laker…
Thanks for the 5 Championships you’ve got for LAL! you’re always be a Laker!
definitely you’re a legend..
But please do not end up on the Miami Heat..
you should come back to lA come on
Times change, the game fluctuates, people come and go – but you Fisher are a rock. You are always consistent, a glue for the team, and an admirable hero on and off the court. Thanks for the amazing years! I’m a Fisher Fan.
DFish, we hope that when your Hall of Fame call comes, you will honor us by going in as a Laker…Someday, your jersey will be in the rafters at Staples WE LOVE YA!!! Management proves again that their heads are places they are not supposed to be…..
We can’t wait for you to get here, in OKC!
I believe Dave McMenamin had sent out a pic of Fish holding the basketball from the game he scored his 10,000th point while talking w/his mother after the game. McMenamin had some very complimentary things to say and I felt obliged to do the same. Somehow my comments didn’t make up on the page but I recalled them in a very bittersweet way when a few days later Fish was traded.
Those comments were along these lines:
Derek Fisher has become a 16-year vet and 5-time NBA champion from shear hard work, guts, smarts and humility. The most appropriate word to describe a person who has all those qualities is talent. Most of us are lucky to have just one of those qualities. Derek Fisher purple and gold always. Thanks for everything.
PS Game 3 NBA Finals vs Celtics 4th quarter had me running to the TV screaming, almost punching it as Fisher put the game away with lay-up and the foul on three greens. Girlfriend seriously thought I had gone crazy and I’m sure neighbors did too.
Wish you and your family the best. Sometimes it’s sad basketball has to have winners and losers, their team and ours, trades and good-byes.
Gracias por todo,
From a die-hard Lakers fan who will hate rooting a player on the other team.
Sorry to see a great man on and off the court be forced to leave the lakers, the fact that the front office could not see that with out you to be the yang to kobe ying there would be no 5 ring shows how stupid they are being. i love kobe but with out you there to help him , i am afraid that he will go to his old ways even more. you desrved to retire a laker and your jersey retired for all the the great thing you have done for us. truly deeply sorry to see you leave. good luck to where ever you go man.
Mr. Fisher,
Come to okc!! We need you bad for playoff time. Get number 6 and number 1 for okc.. If you really hate it you could sign with the lakers again for next yr. haha. Best wishes wherever you end up, but I know all of okc would welcome your veteran experience, attitude, and leadership with open arms.
God bless,
Tim
When I heard Derek Fisher, my favorite basketball player of all time, was traded, it was a huge blow to me. I can remember being at the kitchen table with my mom and my brother and watching those last, few, nail-biting seconds of so many games were D Fish ALWAYS came through. I was born a Laker fan and I will forever remain a Laker fan; however, this decision by the Lakers to trade someone who has done so much for the entire NBA as a whole, makes absolutely no sense whatsover. This just makes me soooooo sad…it’s not fair at all. D Fish, we love you and you have our full support!!! You’ll always be my fave 🙂
Fisher ,
I have loved you for as long as I have loved the lakers. You were always my favorite laker player. When I heard the news about you being traded I was angry & confused, but most of all I was hurt! It’s been days & still whenever I hear something about the trade I get emotional. You were the heart of the team & I wish so much that this never happened! I will continue to be one of your biggest fans & follow you were ever you go<3 I will always be a laker fan, ive never known anything else, but my heart is definitively not in it anymore. This just continues to show that there is no dedication to the fans but to their wallets. Where ever you end up I know youll be great !
Thank you so much for all the great memories and great shots you made in your career as a Laker. Very sad to see you go. But joining OKC probably gives you a great chance on getting ring #6.
good luck to you, sir.
Derek, as you know there is a season for all things, certainly life is no different. Whether you play basketball again or where is not important. What is important is how you use your testimony that is born out of your life’s experiences. Now – suffering the suprising and public way you were dismissed from the Lakers – it apprears HE has plans for you in a “new season”. Perhaps no athlete beyond you and Tim Tebow have a better forum to witness Christ from. Your championship pedigree was born from over acheivement, by the grace of GOD you have excelled beyond your talent & wildest dreams. Maybe NOW you can feel free to tell the world – on a full-time basis, who made you who you are. Many of unemployed, marginalized and downtrodden men who are ready to give up can really benefit from your testimony … it’s a new season -and as always you’re in the BIGGEST game.
Continued Blessings!
This is a sad day in Lakerland. Derek’s never ending committment to hard work and excellence in play is a pedastal only achieved by few. As a long time Laker fan, it was an honor to have Derek represent The Purple and Gold for 13 seasons. We will miss you, Mr. O.4.
We will miss Calabasas’s favorite son. Thought The Lakers had more class. You contributions to the Lakers will always be remembered as well as the CLASS you brought to LA. Best of luck in OKC… Hope you get your sixth ring this year gp calabasas ca
Awww man it was a total shock to me when I heard that he got traded it was the saddest moment for me. To make matters worst I had just bought my Laker/Fisher Jersey 2days b4 the news was made public. Everyone called me to rub it in but I will still wear it with pride but it wont be the same!! Come back to Lakers!!!! Love ya!!!
Derek, I remember watching you when you came into the league in 1996. You were such a scrappy player and even then you played with a lot of heart. Over the years you gave us so many memories. Your jump shot turned into one of the most feared and deadliest in NBA history! I can remember all those shots you hit against San Antonio in 2001, the big threes against Sacramento, Orlando in 2009, Boston in 2010, and, of course, the famous 0.4. I’ve actually begun imitating your shooting style and it’s helped me a lot. You will always be a Laker in my book and one of the most beloved players of all time. We’ll miss you.
God bless,
Richard
Welcome to the Oklahoma City Thunder Mr. Fisher…
We look forward to you helping us get our first championship and your 6th!
Fish…we already miss you in LA. as u already know, the nature of this business can be very cold. we really hope to see u back with the purple & gold for next season, if not on the court, as a part of the coaching staff. you are a LAKER LIFER. yes, we had to get younger and more athletic, but trading you was a harsh reality. hopefully, you are not bitter towards the organization and still hold the love in your heart for the Lakeshow. keep grindin.
what else can you say about a player like fisher so many times ive been there to watch you pull out a shot out of your bag to get a win for us whether is playoffs or regular season just like you did against the mavs earlier in the year i trully admire you as a person first and player second it trully hurts to see you in a diffrent uniform again but life is life and you cant stop the wheels from turning once they get going may god bless your path for you and your family i cried with you the first time you left and i cried again when you got traded 1love fish always and forever a laker great no matter what other people think. hope to see your number in the rafters after you retire…
Dear Mr Fisher,
When I heard the news that Houston was buying out your contract I told all my Thunder friends, we need Fish. The reasons I listed were many, your pedigree as a winner is unquestioned and the 5 Championship rings are impressive, but there will come a day when you look back at your career and understand why my number one reason to sign Derek Fisher was Derek Fisher’s integrity. I’m thrilled that Sam Presti and the Thunder organization felt the same way. Welcome to OKC
