Strong Shooting Not Enough

Derek Fisher drained six shots on Sunday afternoon, but his output wasn’t enough to help the Los Angeles Lakers get past the Portland Trailblazers.

Fish scored 14 points, shooting over 50 percent from both the floor and the three point line. The Trailblazers, though, held off Los Angeles at the end, winning 91-88.

No. 2’s 14 points were the most he’s scored in two weeks, last cracking that barrier with a 15-point outburst against the Phoenix Suns.

D-Fish started his scoring early, hitting a three on his first shot of the game, a bucket that gave the Lakers a five point lead. He hit another bucket minutes later to give him five points in the opening period.

But it wasn’t just on the scoring side where D-Fish helped out. He found Lamar Odom in the first for an assist, then No. 2 picked up two more in the in the fourth quarter, both times hitting Pau Gasol. He also scored five points in the final frame, when the game was still up for grabs.

Afterward, Fish noted that the Lakers should be a bit nervous closing out the season, that with Andrew Bynum down, they clearly aren’t the same.

"Our margin for error is not as big as it was in the past," Fisher said to the Associated Press. "Teams are getting better. It’s not that far off, as far as I’m concerned, but that doesn’t mean we’re OK with what’s happening."

NEXT UP
The Lakers wrapped up the Western Conference’s top seed by beating the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday, a game in which D-Fish had three assists. They close the season without leaving the Staples Center, playing the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday and the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday.
